How do you build a physical and digital focal point for the world's biggest sporting event? You give it a realtime heart.
Positioned on Doha's Corniche, the official FIFA 2022 Countdown Clock wasn't just a timer — it was a global monument. Behind its sweeping architecture ran a cutting-edge realtime engine, built in Unreal Engine, simulating the falling sands of time across a sculptural digital canvas — every second, day and night, for a full year. Globally broadcast and visited by more than a million fans, it became the beating heart of the tournament's buildup.
Unveiled 21 November 2021, one year to kick-off.
Results
More Than Just a Timer
The FIFA World Cup demands a stage like no other. The goal was to create a countdown experience that didn't just tick away the seconds, but actively built global anticipation: a striking physical monument fused with a dynamic, realtime digital canvas — an installation capable of stopping people in their tracks and becoming a highly shareable, iconic landmark in the heart of Doha.
Physical Meets Digital
Inspired by the sweeping, unbroken curves of the tournament's official emblem, the monumental hourglass structure — designed by Imagination and engineered by NEWSUBSTANCE — became the canvas for our work: high-fidelity realtime visual engines, built in Unreal Engine, simulating the sands of time in perpetual motion. As the sun set over the city, the installation transformed, with immersive LED content and spatial lighting synced to the energy of the crowds. Every single second ticking down became a visual event, blending light, motion and spatial design into a singular, awe-inspiring experience.

A Global Anchor
The final execution was a flawless fusion of spatial computing and physical architecture. Our real-time system ran continuously for 365 days — through desert heat, global broadcasts and more than a million fan visits — without missing a frame. Whether experienced through sweeping cinematic broadcast shots or in the intimate moments fans shared in person, the installation became the definitive focal point of the World Cup buildup. It wasn't just built to function; it was built to capture the imagination of the world.
“The unveiling of the Countdown Clock is a special moment for Qatar as a host country, as we enter the final straight on the way to delivering a transformative tournament with a lasting legacy — the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and Arab world.”
